“Although I grew up in the 1960's, the village where I grew up felt more like the 1940's. Men went to work, few women did; most of them running a household and bringing up kids.
Grocery shopping was done on foot, on a daily basis. And I remember the determination and focus of these women, wrapped up in sturdy wool coats and obligatory headscarves, moving from shop to shop.”
