Art from the Heart

Art from the Heart

Posted by Alexander Millar on 8th Feb 2023

Every piece of art should offer an emotional connection, and while my 'gadgies' provide a sense of warm nostalgia and family closeness, my 'A Time and a Place' paintings elude more to romantic love.

So in this season of romance I'd like to offer you a 10% saving on signed, limited edition prints from this collection from now until 28 February 2023. This offer is viable online and in our galleries.

This collection of original paintings and prints,  transport my 'Youth and 'Young Manhood/Peaky Blinders' characters to iconic city locations throughout the UK and further afield, from the High Level Bridge in Newcastle to the Trocadero Gardens in Paris.

The location of each painting is highly significant in my life and most see the introduction of female figures into these scenes. The places featured that are very special to me include New York, Paris, London, Glasgow, Birmingham and Newcastle; cities that have inspired Along The Canal, Cupid's Arrow, In the Bleak Midwinter, Stay with Me till Dawn, The Boys are Back in Town, The Done Deal, The Rendezous and West Side Story.

I’ve built my reputation on painting traditional working class men in flat caps and old, baggy suits as I've always loved painting wool and tweed, so portraying figures in the dress code of the 1920's and 30's was what partly inspired me to paint these characters in well-know places.

The old black and white photos from the 1930s of my Grandfather - showing him as a young dapper Dan, dressed in his finest for a night on the town also motivated me to imagine my well-kent 'gadgies' as younger, romantic figures.

This collection of large original oil paintings and signed limited edition prints are available to view online and in my galleries in Newcastle and Glasgow.
