Heading home
I always remember a kind of stillness around the time we all had to head home for the night. Walking the one or two miles back to the village from fishing on the banks of the river Irvine in the dying light of the day catching nothing but eels, more eels and the occasional bike frame or after a day playing football along by the swing park kicking more legs and ankles than footballs or picking brambles with the whole family grandparents included and walking the whole way back in the fading autumn light like a great throng of Amish looking folk there was always a stillness to the walk home. What made the experience even more delightful was the roaring fire that would be waiting for the returning travelers and it wasn’t as always in my mind the feeling of being warm next to the fire, but also the smell of burning coal that would be so comforting to me. I hope you can get the same sense of the warmth of those wonderful days from this scene
