"The enigmatic island of Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde, inspires me every time I see it. It's been part of my life since growing up in Ayrshire.

Though it fascinates me, I've never taken the boat trip from Girvan Harbour to visit it - I think I prefer to let my childhood fantasies about this 'volcanic' desert island remain unspoiled.

I'm happy to view it from afar, where the light on the clouds and on the sea makes it look different every time I paint it."
